Can I do the MetaLife Program if I have had gastric bypass surgery?

The MetaLife Program is contraindicated for a majority of those who have had any of the major gastric bypass surgeries that are available today. Gastric bypass surgery leads to nutrient malabsorption and increased nutrient needs. Individuals who have gastric bypass surgery are usually required to follow lifelong dietary restrictions that can include eating no more than 2-4 oz at meals, eating a specified macronutrient (carbohydrate, protein, fats, etc) diet, and taking specific protein and vitamin supplements. The degree of malabsorption, increased nutrient needs and strictness of lifelong dietary guidelines that must be followed depends on the type of gastric bypass surgery that was performed. Those who have the Roux-en-Y or Duodenal Switch gastric bypass surgery usually experience the greatest malabsorption, experience the greatest increase in nutrient needs and have to follow much stricter lifelong dietary guidelines after surgery. Those who have the Gastric Band gastric bypass surgery usually experience less malabsorption in comparison to the other gastric bypass surgeries mentioned. These individuals are still required to follow lifelong dietary restrictions but usually not as many compared to those who have the Roux-en-Y or Duodenal Switch surgeries. The MetaLife Program will be contraindicated for most individuals with a history of gastric bypass surgery. Anyone with a history of gastric bypass surgery must first obtain approval from their Bariatric physician before beginning the MetaLife Program.
